What is a Strengths Based Approach?

Updated: May 29, 2020

A Strengths based approach centres on existing strengths and talents a person already possesses and in simple terms, focuses on these innate strengths, abilities & potential rather than focusing on weakness, deficiencies or problem areas, which are often the focus of many development interventions. The term derives from a social work practice theory, however when applied to people development it can positively change the paradigm.

How does it work in practice?

A strengths based profiling tool, like Strengths Profiler is a great way for individuals and teams to understand their own strengths as a starting point. Once individuals are aware of these then a debrief conversation with an accredited practitioner provides a safe and collaborative environment to further explore these strengths and discuss how they show up in work environments and every day life and importantly how they can be maximised and leveraged.

The key point is that this approach values the potential, talents, skills and knowledge already present in individuals and teams. Further coaching can be instrumental in helping people to tap into any strengths they are not already using and to leverage these to allow them to truly operate in their strengths every day and display more of their authentic selves.

Following a Strengths based approach to development doesn't mean that you forget about the more challenging aspects of work and life, rather than spending time and attention on how to 'fix' these weaknesses, the focus is on how you can use the strengths you already possess to remediate these in a different and more effective way.
